He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy and the theatre school of the National Theatre of Chaillot under the direction of Antoine Vitez. He began his professional career in 1988. Among Braunschweig's productions are performances of works by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Molière, Kleist, Büchner, Ibsen, Chekhov, Wedekind, Pirandello, Brecht, Horváth, Hanoch Levin, Olivier Py, and Arne Lygre.
He headed the National Drama Centre in Orléans (1993-1998), then the National Theatre of Strasbourg and its school (2000-2008). Since 2010, he directed the National Theatre de la Colline, where he staged "A Doll's House", "Rosmersholm", and "The Wild Duck" by Ibsen, "Lulu" by Wedekind, "Six Characters in Search of an Author" by Pirandello, "Happy Days" by Beckett, "I Disappear", "Days Under the Earth", and "Nothing of Mine" by Arne Lygre. Since 2015, he has been the director of the Parisian theatre "Odéon – Théâtre de l'Europe". In 2016, he collaborated for the first time with the Comédie-Française, staging Racine's play "Britannicus".
Braunschweig has several opera productions to his name. He has worked at La Scala, the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Opéra-Comique, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Berlin State Opera, and elsewhere. He has staged works by Fénelon, Bartók, Beethoven, Dazzi, Janáček, Verdi, Mozart, Strauss, Berg, Wagner, Debussy, and Schreker.
In addition to his theatre and opera productions, which number nearly sixty, Stéphane Braunschweig has published a collection of texts and conversations about theatre titled "Small Doors, Large Landscapes", as well as translations from German, Italian, and Norwegian of plays by Büchner, Kleist, Brecht, Pirandello, and Lygre.
He holds the titles of Knight of the Legion of Honour and Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France.
